The U.S. government’s recent stake in Intel comes after a long period of floundering at the company’s foundry business.
Intel doesn’t need cash. Instead, the struggling semiconductor giant needs to figure out how to drum up interest for its foundry business.
While Intel says the government is making an “$8.9 billion investment in Intel common stock,” the administration does not appear to be committing new funds.
Such federal government ownership of a major corporation would mark a dramatic departure from long-standing U.S. policy.
This deal would be meant to help Intel bulk up its U.S. chip manufacturing, including its much-delayed Ohio factory.
